Skin is a vital organ in our body. Maintaining skin integrity during patient care is important for every individual. A number of well-recognized etiologies are known to result in skin damage. One of the etiologic factors resulting in chronic inflammation and erosion of the skin is “moisture”. Moisture-associated skin damage (MASD) is defined as inflammation and erosion of the skin caused by prolonged exposure to various sources of moisture. MASD encompasses a range of conditions, including incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD).

 Dr. David Voegeli PhD, BSc 

  • Former associate professor of nursing within the Skin Health Research Group in the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Southampton. 
  • Reputed Internationally in the field of skin health and tissue viability, and much of his recent research has focused on Moisture-Associated skin damage, particularly incontinence associated dermatitis (IAD) in both clinical and laboratory settings. 
  • Member of the global IAD expert panel that produced the 2015 international best practice guidelines, and more recently has collaborated on the development and testing of the Ghent Global IAD Categorization Tool (GLOBIAD). 
  • Published extensively in the areas of skin health and clinical nursing and is on the editorial board of The Journal of Wound Care. 
  • Member of the European Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel, contributing to the 2014 International Clinical Guidelines for the prevention and management of pressure ulcers, and is currently contributing to the revision of these for the 2019 guidelines within the international working groups focusing on wound care and wound dressings.
